There has been some debate among people who are in the process of losing weight, and a lot of that comes down to their perception of what’s necessary for it to happen.
In my experience, I have seen people who are just starting on a new diet, or someone who has lost 5-10 pounds just because it is so easy. And even those who have gained weight will talk to everyone who’s come by, and they will say they haven’t done anything to gain weight at all, and then they may say something like, ‘I’ve eaten something that I shouldn’t eat,’ ” he says. “Those are the people I see the most often.”
This is not an exact science—the more people lose weight, the more fat they have, and the longer the cycle of weight loss will go on—but that is not a reason that any fat person should just avoid a new diet, says Eric Cressey, PhD, a professor emeritus of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and author of The Slim-Fast Diet.
“But for those that gain weight, there are factors that they need to take care of first,” says Cressey, author of the upcoming book Iced Shakes and the Slim-Fast Diet. “So it’s not as if the only way to lose fat is to burn fat,” he says. “Most of fat is lost through the liver, and it isn’t that simple to burn that fat. You have to take care of your blood sugar, your blood cholesterol—all of those things need to be improved.”
Cressey also recommends that people not skip meals—it may feel that way, but it’s important to eat some of the foods you’re trying to lose weight on—and even if it doesn’t sound so easy, it can be hard to know how much you should eat, he adds. “If you don’t know, it’s easier to go hungry and be disappointed that things aren’t better.”
Cressey also says that, for people who are able to sustain a diet with relatively frequent meals, getting over one or two foods is critical. “It may seem trivial, but you have to be able to do that in order to lose the amount of weight that you’re trying to lose,” Cressey says.
