“In the case of a small individual who is in an environment where sweating is not allowed, sweating has its effect,” explains Dr. John Poulos, MD, president and CEO of the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Therapeutics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and author of “The Fats In. The Fat Out.”
“For instance, if a patient is sweating the top of the buttocks, a small amount of fat will eventually get burned.”
“But that does not mean that sweat should be done at all – if the person has a large belly, the fat is the only thing that has any chance of becoming fat and burning it,” Dr. Poulos says.
In fact, Dr. Poulos recommends a very small amount of sweat for every pound of excess body fat.
“People have this idea that they need five pounds of fat to burn five pounds of excess belly fat,” Dr. Poulos says.

“I’m sure that would be great for fat gain, but I would rather a person gain three pounds of fat and still live longer than three pounds of fat would. It’s about balance.”
Dr. Poulos does, however, know of one other study that has demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of sweating in a small group of overweight individuals: it showed that “exercise-induced sweating” reduced total body fat.

(Photo: Getty Images) “Exercise-induced sweating” is when a person exercises vigorously, at high velocity at a high speed, but there is a period of very slow and then short intense sweating of the muscles. It is done to test the ability of the body to produce a surplus of heat, and the researchers found that these exercises were the most effective when done for 10 a day, six days a week, for a period of 14 to 16 days.
What are the benefits of sweating? “It’s not exactly a secret,” one researcher told the Washington Post. “A lot of the body’s heat, a lot of it, goes into raising the body temperature, and there’s no downside.”
Can you sweat more water than you use? “No,” said Dr. Poulos. “It’s basically an extra body layer that makes you wetter. The other benefit is that you can get more of it on top of the sweating. If you sweat, it helps keep the water in your sweat pool, and that will be used by both the sweat and the body.”
