What about all the other things I hear? Well, here’s a question that has been floating around the internet for years, and I’m finally going to ask my own father:
Is the only way to deal with obesity a lot of extra weight?
Yes, it is absolutely true that one of the most obvious and easy ways to deal with obesity is to gain lots of weight, as this is the exact opposite of the way it works in the real world, where people become significantly fatter when they start to lose weight, not gain it, as is the conventional wisdom.
What we learn very, very early in life is that calories matter. And the fact that there are so many calories in food matters also.
If you only eat what’s available, you’re going to get fat over time, as your calorie intake becomes less than the amount of food you’re actually burning. But even if the calories that you can put into your mouth stay the same, they become less available all the time. That’s because you don’t have access to as many calories as you used to. Once you actually stop taking in calories, this equation is no longer a valid guide.
But if you eat as many calories as you burn, you stay thin even if your calories have changed. So if you’ve got a lot of extra calories in your belly, just eat more and move more. If you’ve got excess weight, but you’re feeling good, stop eating. Take a walk. Eat something healthy and move your body around. If you’re in dire need, go on a starvation diet: Eat less or be on a really strict, very low-calorie diet for several days.
As they say, the more you can go on a diet, the less you have to gain. It’s not an exaggeration to say that people who cut all the fat and moved to a very low-calorie diet usually look better than those who kept eating the same thing all the time.
When I talk to friends about weight gain, I talk to them about how much I like the people who give off that positive glow because it is so much easier, and the people who don’t, I talk to them about how much it is difficult to keep doing.
People often say it’s so tough. It makes me wonder what the people we like might really be eating.
