It’s an exciting time for those who wish to learn the fundamentals of Java programming. There is the JavaOne conference taking place in Boston and more conferences and tutorials forthcoming to help those interested in Java and its various components. So if you’re looking to get started with the fundamentals of Java, here is my list of 5 best Java tutorials.

1. The Java 6 Tutorial By Matt Drury

If you’re not familiar with Matt Drury’s blog, then you should. He is a Java instructor who has devoted much of his time to teaching Java to beginners. The following blog post on Matt’s blog, “7 Best Java Tutorials (and a guide to each one)” has the following description: “Matt and I have been learning Java for a year now, and I have no doubt that we can use Java to help others along their way, and that we will, some day, be teaching new programming languages.”

The tutorials in this series teach you how to write an instance of java.awt.Frame, write a method and a method signature, write a method that returns the text “Hello, World!”, and much more.

A few good points about the tutorials:

You won’t get lost because some parts of the tutorial are complex. It’s very easy to follow and read. The tutorial is very focused on the concepts you need to know if you want to create a simple application or a more complex one.

Matt is a good writer. I particularly like some of his examples! I also liked a good analogy that he uses in one of my projects where you are going to create a service to display a text message. Let’s say you have a simple text message “Hello, World!” for displaying on your browser. The first step is to have a base class called Message and have two methods in it: getText() and displayText(). Let’s say you want to render your message on a background frame by a form. After reading about these two steps, you will have created a full-featured client-side application.

2. Complete Java Introduction By Dan Stapleton For those who have never explored Java and would like to read an introduction book on how Java works. Dan Stapleton’s book contains many useful articles on how to create useful software. There are several sections that I find the most useful: 1) The basic Java programming language
