The US Supreme Court has overturned a lower court’s finding that a law that bans the sale of guns in federal stores violates the Second Amendment.
The justices ruled 7-0, while the dissenting Justices said the ruling was likely to lead to the further expansion of gun rights. The court agreed to hear the case and asked the justices to let lower courts decide.
The case stems from the 2005 Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which has resulted in a patchwork quilt of state laws on how to make guns available to buyers of certain kinds and of how to restrict the sale of so-called assault weapons.
The law, which required gun sellers and buyers to obtain a federal ID before transferring a firearm, banned most gun-display items. Some people, including members of Congress, objected to the requirement and claimed the law forced the purchase of guns in a way that was not permitted under the First Amendment, which prohibits government from forcing the “separation of church and state.”
