I just had a lot to say on Twitter about an article about what it means to be a feminist, and how it’s possible that the same group has no interest in equality while being outraged over any criticism of feminism or gender.
As it turns out, that’s not just a feminist view. The group of people who write for feminism sites and comment on feminism are male feminists. They have a pretty good track record of pushing the “men’s rights movement” agenda.
They have written a fair amount of things about sexism and the “woman shortage.”
And now, they’ve turned against feminism.
I can’t recall the number of times I’ve seen male feminists have the following thought process when they go to look up feminism:
“This is just another example of how privileged we are and how privileged we have for not having to think so hard about this stuff.”
“In the same way men are being oppressed by women’s organizations, feminists are oppressing men too. As you might expect, feminist organizations are also perpetuating a system of privilege.”
Which is all fine. There’s plenty of privilege involved and an abundance of oppression. If you think there’s an “oppression” at work, why don’t you take a look at your own situation? Do you have more people you agree with than people you disagree with? If so, how do you handle the people who are arguing against you when you don’t even realize a problem exists? Why isn’t there a “men’s liberation movement” in a similar form to the one it replaced? Isn’t that kind of liberation a good thing?
And for that matter, when you look up the “women’s movement” and its leader, you see that her name is Eleanor Smeal. Is her movement really working to advance the interests of women? Is she really working towards equal rights for men, as she’s promoted in her website? The feminist movement that you see promoting equality for both women and men has a name. But that doesn’t mean they want all men to get equal rights. Not unless they’ll be taking the time to work for them.
I can’t see how you can have both a feminist movement
