Is Saffron business profitable? – Saffron Crocus Planting Distance

October 29, 2020

In the first half of 2016, the Saffron business saw a 30 percent boost due to the rise of other varieties in the Indian market.

As per a December 2016 report from KPMG, the Saffron business earned Rs 4,844 crore, compared to Rs 5,063 crore in the same period in 2015, primarily due to rising demand in the region.

The main reason for the increase in demand was from people looking to eat with whole sambar and curry leaves.

A key part of Indian cuisine is sambar (or tiffin) as part of it is a delicious and easy-to-digest curd-based snack.

Saffron, on the other hand, is considered a symbol of prosperity.

The consumption of sambar in India has also increased.

At the same time, the industry has not benefited as many people were opting for other types of pulses including millet, soya milk products, lentils, and rice to fill their nutritional needs.

The industry has grown more competitive but there are still some challenges.

Industry leaders are trying to get a piece of the “Saffron pie” through a variety of initiatives. These include a new strategy to push higher value ingredients to the consumer.

They have also been developing new processes to produce saffron-based products like sambar curd, sambar chutney, and sambar ghee.

But, overall, the situation isn’t great.

The Indian industry had a $14 billion trade deficit with India in 2016-17.

This is the largest deficit in the world.

This year, it reached a record $35 billion.
