The quantity of dried saffron is usually in the form of petals, but is most commonly made into small balls of the leaves. These are sold commercially as small cakes, and can be a significant portion of saffron’s total weight.
The weight of a cake like the ones above is 1.5 oz. per 2 tsp. It’s important to note that petals can vary greatly in mass, size, and shape, depending on the size of the saffron petals. For example, if saffron grows a few hundred feet in the garden, its weight may be as little as 1/4 oz for each pound of weight. The weight of each teaspoon will depend on how thick the petals were, how much they’re packed together, and the temperature of the room where you prepared the cakes.
The weight of the purest saffron I’ve tasted came from a large square cake that weighed 5/8 oz. per pound.
So here, let me calculate the weight of each of these cakes using those approximate values to get the weight of each one as well as a ballpark estimate of how much each of them contains:
Cake: 1.5 oz for 4 tsp.
2 tsp.: 7.5 oz. for 1 oz.
4 tsp.: 15.5 oz. for 1.5 oz.
How much of a difference are I going to see on these things?
I’ll let them do the talking about that first. You could easily use the weights given to me above to weigh the cakes. The average weight of a single 1 oz. cake was about 1/2 lb.
Let’s see how they compare to some of my other favorite foods:
Bacon contains about 40% saturated fat, so the grams of saturated fat per tablespoon are 10 to about 20 (3/4 cup = ½ tbsp.) It also contains about 10% carbohydrates, which means that the grams of sugar per tablespoon are probably 15 to 25 grams. All these values are a good guideline to be wary of (though you should do your own calculations to get those to the same level). A 1/2 cup of bacon contains about 1 tbsp. of fat, 10 grams of carbs, and 6 grams of sugar.
Cheese contains about 15% saturated fat, so the grams of saturated fat per tablespoon are 5 to about 15 (1/2 cup = ½ tbsp.)
