How much is a gram of saffron? – How Many Saffron Bulbs Per Acre

August 24, 2020

A gram of saffron is approximately 10-13 grams which is about what I would buy for a small to medium sized meal. If you are buying saffron leaves alone, you can expect to pay around $0.50/gram for whole leaves or $1.95/gram or more if buying separate leaves, with one leaf or two leaf options depending on how you like it. So in terms of cooking up a larger meal, there are no negatives. But I think it’s important to note that for someone who is a novice saffron cook, buying raw leaves is definitely not a bad idea, since it is possible you might have to use less oil which will help with your heat.

How do I store saffron?

Although its roots are in India, which is one of the most temperate regions on Earth, the leaves are also grown in some parts of the world all over the world, with some being as far away as Africa.

So while their shelf life is not very long, the leaves can be stored in a cool dark place for anywhere from 4-10 years depending on the climate which they are grown for. And although they are a bit hard to find in the United States, you can actually buy dried saffron leaves online from a number of online retailers such as Amazon from a pretty reasonable price or through their online store, with the biggest prices being around $0.50-$0.70/gram for whole leaves and $0.20-$0.60/gram for split saffron leaves.

So if you are in the market for fresh saffron leaves, they are definitely cheaper online versus the store, and it’s really worth the money if you’re planning on storing it for very long. And of course you can always purchase it in bulk at the grocery store at your nearest health food store which is a nice treat if you plan on cooking it up or just keeping it in the fridge for long.
