This year, at my first birthday party since moving into my first apartment, everyone is still trying to figure out what they draw that they never imagined they could draw. I started the hashtag #MyDumbDrawing to show that I was willing to explore the limits of my existing creativity. I had a lot of fun with it, to be honest, but there probably are fewer and fewer people out there looking to share their drawing with the world. Which is to say that the vast majority of the public is already familiar with what is currently the accepted norm for cartooning – a pencil and paper.

So, if I can help promote my art and encourage others to be creative, why not turn my hobby into a profession?

If I become a professional illustrator, I can draw anything and everything I want, at any pace that makes me happy. I can get things done on the fly. It’s a great outlet for my creativity that doesn’t require a lot of energy or discipline at all.

How much will it cost?

Right now I don’t have a specific price in mind, but there are a lot of free services that allow you to put your art to work for small monthly fees. There are services like Instagram, Fiverr, and Upwork.

For the purposes of this project, I’ll be charging $300/month. Of course, that’s not cheap and as a professional illustrator, you wouldn’t ask for much of a raise, but it’s a more-or-less standard salary for the types of projects I’d like to do.

You should plan on drawing and writing something to be shown in a portfolio, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be complete. After all, someone could show you an idea to do a webcomic about how you’re a genius, or have no idea what to use for an image. As long as it’s well-paced and contains a narrative that makes it feel like you’ve been there before, there’s no one-size-fits-all way to draw. My goal in making the project is to get my ideas out into the world for others
