How often do you work and what kind of work?
If you haven’t considered one subject completely, or if you need a break from that, then playing one skill or another is a great way to recharge. It is also helpful to take a break on a regular basis.
One skill that is very important is piano. I also play guitar, violin, and have a bit of a band. When I quit I was going to do some acoustic work on my own, but I found my guitar chops were not to your liking. So now I use my piano for most of my guitar playing (a few of my songs were written around acoustic guitar). Most musicians don’t really like the piano, but I find it much better for improvisational writing.
I can’t help but think of this as my ‘last days’ from acting. If you get lucky I am still in the world of the drama school.
What were some of your best memories from acting that you would like to share with people?
One memory I remember vividly is watching an audition I had given for the lead of The Big Bang Theory. After it aired it was my turn in an episode of Law & Order called “Fashion Police”.
It took me awhile to get into the character, she was a very attractive girl with very nice manners. I was nervous, but also very pleased when she started crying at the end of that episode. It was a very special moment.
The other great memory is when I went to Paris and worked on Star Wars Episode IV (Episode The Phantom Menace). I had never been to France nor had my French spoken, which is really rare for me.
One of my most important scenes in the film is where I auditioned for the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi who is the Jedi Knight in the film. It was my first time going to France, and there was a lot of pressure on me. My scene was very simple and I was afraid to fail because I wasn’t used to playing someone who didn’t have a good English accent.
My English wasn’t really good either, it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be, which I still don’t think is good enough. I had a great time performing and talking to the cast and producers. But I was really proud to be working on Star Wars because I was the only person of color who was cast in any role. That was a big deal!
