It’s a question I’d have to ask my son and his partner. “What am I going to learn?” (I think these are the two questions of the year). “Will I learn violin that is really good? Will I learn with my partner? Will I learn on my own?”
Is it difficult to develop the ability to play the violin?
It’s an issue that I’ll face with any musician. No matter what instrument you play, it’s important to be consistent, not to go back to the days of learning by ear. You need to be able to play it so you can start on it. There will be some changes with age, though. I will have to be conscious of how well my children learn these things, not to worry about what I’ve already done or what might have been my habit. (I didn’t have a habit of learning what I already knew when I first started playing.)
Can playing an instrument affect your writing?
Surely that will be interesting to see.
Do you have any advice for people new to learning to play their instrument?
There is no one correct answer to that. The first step is understanding the instruments you love so much so that you’ll want to play them. This doesn’t mean you have to stick with one for the rest of your life or become a professional musician. What you should do is try them at least a few times. It doesn’t take long to get a solid feel for how they respond to different playing styles and situations. The second step is to practice all the way through – every day. Do it for at least 20 hours – even 40 – and do it while you’re busy with everything else.

It took nearly five years of relentless, tireless battle before President Barack Obama finally had to bow down and show everyone how he really felt on Thursday.
Standing above the roped off White House press corps in his green fedora and striped tie, wearing a “Obama-Pelosi” button and accompanied by his wife, Michelle, Obama uttered an almost incoherent string of three words: “Yes, there is.”
But that was just the start.
