In the pilot, the Cat and Mouse show was more than just good-looking and funny. It wasn’t just good for the show, it was good for the story. So to go back to it, you’ve got to change it up a bit, or you’re going to just have a repeat of the mistakes. I tried to get some of that originality back.
The first thing you have to know about The Amazing World of Gumball is that it’s a children’s book. You’re not going to have a cartoon where all these grownups sit around and try to figure out how to grow up and become a superhero. You can’t. It just doesn’t work. The first year you’re doing a kids’ show, it’s going to be super-serious. The second year you’re going to do something that’s a little bit more risque. The third year it’s going to be more tongue-in-cheek and ridiculous. We tried to do everything within our resources. Then, finally, we said, “Okay, we’re going to go and do this comedy thing.”
Did you see the original Gumball?
Not really. At the beginning that was my favorite show. And then I was like, “Oh, let me do my own.” And then the next year I was like, “Let me do my own.” And then the next year I was like, “Okay.” I can’t remember which year, but I remember the first episode is kind of the beginning. And then you go at it from there, to the very end. It’s a series of six that’s basically Gumball trying to find a way to not be an embarrassment in school. That, in and of itself, is going to be a hard thing to do. I think a lot of people are going to watch the pilot and be like, “Okay, this is the whole series.”
But do you think the series will make children laugh?
I do, absolutely. I would like to think so. I have to say, there might be one child out of the whole series that’s going to crack up while watching it, but at the same time, I want to try to make sure there’s a lot of laughter in it. Kids always love a good laugh, and I am going to try to make that happen. I know it takes a lot of trial and error. And I have to say, I think my biggest challenge is trying to make
