It is quite possible that your child can easily learn guitar, but if he’s not already well-versed in the fundamentals of the instrument, a few lessons might be in order. But first, he or she should have a good grasp of the basics. So which basic chords are commonly used in the chords of a scale?

The first chord to remember is the dominant 7th chord, which is the root of the dominant 7 chord in the key of G major. It is in the key of G and its name is G. You learn this chord in the key of G major. So in the key of A, the first chord in the chord progression of G major is C major.

So to play this chord in the C Major chord progression, you will need to play the A major chord – Fmaj7 – C major, which you may notice is all of the notes in the chord. The C major chord is in the G key so you can learn it easily. You can also play it in other keys which are similar to G major and other related keys.

Another chord we hear often in the music is the minor seventh chord, which is the seventh chord in the C minor key. The minor seventh chord in the key of C minor is Fm7(C); in the key of G you can practice learning it by singing the notes – which you will learn later as a chord progression.

So in the key of A, now that we have established that the first chord in the main progression in G major is C major, we can move onto another key. You may choose to learn the E major chord or one of its derivatives: Gb7(E) – E7 – C major will work great for you.

The E major chord is also very well known – it is the dominant 7th in the key of E major. To play it, go to the key of E major and play C major. Again, this will all sound normal, but now you’ll start to get this chord. The C major chord – Fmaj7 – E7– is all the notes of the chord. So you can learn it easily, too.

When you’re playing a chord which is the dominant 7th in a chord progression of any key (E major, A major, B major, C major, D major, etc.), you should use chords in that key in most of your solos
