” I ask. I have drawn one. I mean, a unicorn. A really sweet, loving, funny, big and silly unicorn. One that would make someone laugh and smile.” I smile and nod. “Then give me a little time. I have to do my book.”
As she leaves, I give the drawing a try. After about three turns, I stop and stare at the design. I feel a bit like I’ve done something wrong. It wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for the weird and weird design on my new paper. I could almost feel this as I looked at it. It looks more like a lettering of a cartoon than something I’d design.
I call up a photo of me wearing a unicorn hat at an event, and try to think of the drawing I remember doing back then. Like all of the other things that have been happening to me since I’ve been drawing, this is becoming less of a problem. I still feel strange about my drawings, but they are no longer as creepy as they once were.
My girlfriend at the time, who knows a little bit about unicorns, gets me into drawing classes.
“Why do you like animals so much?” She asks.
I try to think of something to say. I can’t, and no one seems to care.
“I just… that’s how I feel. I feel very close to animals. I have a deep, raw emotional connection to animals. I’m attracted to cute animals, I like cats and dogs and snakes, and I like to look at horses because my ancestors used to ride horses on the battlefield. I don’t mean to sound insensitive, but that’s the sort of emotion I feel for animals.”
She says this as if it’s something simple and obvious. She’s definitely not used to hearing about her boyfriend’s animal obsession. She’s really, really proud of me, and I’m sure that I’ve
